Consulting engineers may be commonly asked to prepare ‘as-built’ drawings as part of their contractual obligations. In the past, under traditional forms of contract such as the ICE 5th Edition, the construction contract was between the Employer (usually the promoter of the scheme) and the Contractor. The client would engage a consultant to act as the ‘independent’ Engineer (in accordance with the ICE contract), and appoint the consultant under a separate professional services contract – such as ACE Conditions of Engagement.
