Consulting engineers may be commonly asked to prepare ‘as-built’ drawings as part of their contractual obligations. In the past, under traditional forms of contract such as the ICE 5^th Edition, the construction contract was between the Employer (usually the promoter of the scheme) and the Contractor. The client would engage a consultant to act as the ‘independent’ Engineer (in accordance with the ICE contract), and appoint the consultant under a separate professional services contract – such as ACE Conditions of Engagement.
