Derelict sites will inevitably be ‘brownfield’ sites on account of previous development on the site. By implication such sites are vacant and are distinguished by having a period of abandonment and lack of maintenance during which site conditions may have become more hazardous. Geotechnical and geo-environmental engineers may be amongst the first people to re-enter the site.
