Instrumentation and Monitoring – Data Driven Actions, is a two-hour webinar taking place between 11:00-13:00 on Thursday 19th February.

Chaired by AGS Instrumentation and Monitoring Working Group Leader, Tim Clegg (Managing Director of Geosense), this webinar will provide a multi stakeholder perspective of how data is the key foundation for making decisions within the geotechnical industry.

This virtual event will see presenters Phil Child (Seequent), Alice Shrubshall (BuroHappold) and Steve Walthall (Retired Engineering Geologist) each provide a presentation which will collectively focus on the following areas:

-Setting yourself up for data success
-How to ensure useful and good quality data
-Monitoring in the real world
-Using data to make decisions

The webinar will finish with a group Q&A which will allow webinar attendees to ask questions from our four speakers.

Attendees can expect to learn how to build solid data foundations, how to maintain these through the project and how this data is used in the real world to support bridging the gap between assumption and reality.

This webinar is aimed at all levels from asset owner to data user, and will give practical steps on how to gather useful data to drive decision making.

PRESENTATIONS

The AGS Guide to Planning Data Management for a Programme of Geotechnical Instrument and Monitoring

Presentation by Phil Child, Senior Technical Solutions Specialist at Seequent

Phil will provide an overview of the AGS Guide to Planning Data Management for a Programme of Geotechnical Instrument and Monitoring document.  This will help identify key questions to apply to your projects to ensure success.  We will also signpost useful resources allowing you to get started with applying the principles.

Specification of an Effective Monitoring Scheme

Presentation by Alice Shrubshall, Associate Director at Buro Happold

The specification for instrumentation and monitoring is a critical document and care and consideration is required to prevent gaps and ensure the roles and responsibilities are appropriately assigned.  This session will discuss a methodology for which in turn will obtain best value from the data obtained.

Procuring Good Data

Presentation by Tim Clegg, Managing Director of Geosense

We understand what we want to know, we have our design. Its now time to ensure that we ask the right questions when procuring the monitoring to understand what we want to know.
This part of the presentation will explore how to translate a monitoring plan into a procurement strategy to ensure the correct sensors are selected, the right partner is chosen, and the system overall delivers good actionable data.
Looking at the end goal in mind, we will walk you through how spending the time effectively procuring your monitoring services before attending site is a great investment.
Real World Implementation

Presentation by Steve Walthall, Retired Engineering Geologist

Whilst every I&M project is different, there are a number of similarities which are common to each project and form the basis of implementing a successful operation. These include a clear and well defined objective, the selection of appropriate instruments and most importantly, a comprehensive management system to ensure that not only are the right observations made and validated but that they are evaluated and acted upon by the specialist within the team. These principals will be discussed with reference to a range of projects.

Data Review from a Consultant’s Perspective
Presentation by Alice Shrubshall, Associate Director at Buro Happold
When presented with a large volume of data a structured approach is required to be able to interpret its implications.  This can be adapted as the project progresses but a thorough review at the baseline stage is key and will be beneficial to all parties involved in the scheme.
