Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is only acceptable as a last resort and should only be used where alternative measures are not reasonably practicable. RPE ranges from simple comfort masks at one end of the scale to self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) at the other. Select the wrong type and you could end up providing staff too little protection or no protection at all.
This guidance note is based on Health and Safety Executive publication HSG53 – Respiratory Protective Equipment at Work. HSG53 provides guidance on selecting the correct respiratory equipment. Where the level of risk is high, or there are areas of doubt, selection must be made by a competent person.
